Audubon’s Shearwater

Puffinus lherminieri

Tom Jenner

Jehl saw this species in small numbers almost every day during intensive observations off the Pacific coast of northern Central America between 10th and 17th April 1973. On the afternoon of the 15th, he saw about 4000 birds in three hours. On my pelagic trip off the coast of Guatemala on 11th May, we saw about 8 and on my pelagic trip off El Salvador on 2nd July, we saw about 5. On the Guatemalan trip, some stayed around the boat for long periods, occasionally leaving and then returning, which made numbers hard to estimate. On the El Salvador trip, all the birds were heading westward up the coast; none were seen close to the shore and most were seen in deep waters beyond the Pacific shelf.
