Bat Falcon

Falco rufigularis

Tom Jenner
This species is found throughout much of the region, though it is far commoner on the Caribbean slope. Howell and Webb do not include it for the central parts of northern Central America (except the Peten), but I have seen them at Celaque and La Muralla which suggest that they are found throughout. The status on the Pacific slope is less clear. I have seen them at Santa Maria de Jesus on the Pacific slope of Guatemala, but I have still never seen one in El Salvador. The Pacific slope gets progressively drier from Guatemala into El Salvador and this may account for the apparent rarity in the country, though Komar and Dominguez do include it in the El Salvador list as a confirmed breeder.
