Black Hawk-Eagle

Spizaetus tyrannus

Tom Jenner
This species is found throughout the region, but is definitely far commoner on the Caribbean slope. The large size makes this species conspicuous, but it is often first located by its far carrying wheooo call. It is fairly easy to see in places like Pico Bonito. Other than the Caribbean slope, Howell and Webb give only 3 locations for this species: one in southern Honduras, one in El Salvador and one in the western highlands of Guatemala. The only known site in El Salvador is El Imposible, where they are fairly easy to see. The site in southern Honduras is probably La Tigra, where I have seen them on both of my visits. However, I have seen this species on several occasions in western Guatemala at Finca Chicharos, Fuentes Georginas, Santa Maria de Jesus and a fourth location further west that I could not locate on subsequent visits. Considering the relatively little time that I have spent in the region, I would consider this species to be fairly common there. Howell and Webb give the altitudinal range of this species as 0-1000m, though up to 1500m in southern Mexico and Guatemala. All of my sightings in the Western Highlands of Guatemala have been much higher than this (except Finca Chicharos which is at about 1400m).
