The status of the Blue-footed Booby is a bit unclear in our
region. There have been a number of records of birds on Los
Farallones, which is a small group of rocky islands in the mouth
of the Gulf of Fonseca. They were formerly owned by Honduras
(and hence the Blue-footed Booby is often found on Honduran
lists), but is now part of Nicaragua. Monroe saw more than 75
birds when he visited in October. Locals told him that they
breed there in the early spring months, but breeding has not
been confirmed by any visiting ornithologist. Whether or not
they are local breeders, it is evident that they are regular
in the area of the Gulf of Fonseca, even if there are no actual
records yet from Honduras. This species was not seen on either
of my pelagic trips off the Pacific coast. Komar and Dominguez
give only three records for El Salvador. Land does not include
the species for Guatemala, nor does Knut Eisermann in his species
list for the country (Cayayabirding.com). Jehl did not see this
species at all during intensive observations off the Pacific
coast of northern Central America between 10th and 17th April
1973.
