| This is a very rare species throughout
its range. The main stronghold in the region seems to be the
Peten in northern Guatemala. Jason Berry led tours through Guatemala
for several years and twice saw this species at Tikal. I asked
the bird guides at Tikal about this species and they said that
they have found nests in previous years, though I have never
heard of any birders being taken to see one. It is likely that
this species is also found in the Mosquitia in Honduras, though
I have no confirmed records. The only records of this species
mentioned by Monroe are from San Pedro Sula and La Ceiba. The
area around San Pedro Sula is now far too developed to still
have this species, but Pico Bonito, near La Ceiba, could still
hold them. I have still never seen this species in the wild. |
