Crested Guan

Penelope purpurascens

more info here
The map in Howell and Webb shows this species as ranging along both slopes of northern Central America, though absent from deep within the interior. They have been hunted for food, which must have affected their numbers, but the status of ‘uncommon to rare’ given by Howell and Webb is probably a bit of an exaggeration (though they do state that they are commoner in protected areas), as I come across them fairly often. Their numbers have been most affected along the Pacific slope, where my only sightings have been at El Imposible in El Salvador and Tarrales in Guatemala. Elsewhere in Guatemala, I have seen them at Cerro Cahui and Tikal. In Honduras, I have seen them at La Muralla, Las Marias, Cerro Azul and Cusuco.
