Great
Black Hawk
Buteogallus

| This species has a similar range
in our region to the Common Black Hawk, though it is far less
common. Great Black Hawks are also found in a similar variety
of lowland habitats and can be found in mangroves, though I
feel that they are more common in higher rocky areas. Most of
my observations of this species have been at Pico Bonito National
Park, where they are quite common. Other sites in Honduras where
I have seen them are over the fields near to Tempiscapa Gorge
in Olancho and over the fields near to Gracias, just outside
of Celaque National Park. The only place where I have seen this
species in El Salvador is El Imposible National Park and I have
still not seen one in Guatemala. Howell and Webb do not include
the interior of Honduras within the range of this species, though
two of my sightings above would tend to dispute that. |
