Great Curassow

Crax rubra

more info here
This species is found along both slopes of northern Central America, though Howell and Webb show it as absent from the interior. This species has been hunted extensively and it is now an uncommon species that is often wary of humans. The one exception to this seems to be at Tikal in northern Guatemala, where they are fairly easy to see and are not as quick to run away as they are elsewhere. I have seen them a couple of times at El Imposible, which is the only known site in El Salvador, and at Pico Bonito in Honduras. Often the best way to locate them is by call, or the distinctive sound as they run through dry leaves on the forest floor.
