Harris'
Hawk
Parabuteo
unicinctus
|
 |
| This is an uncommon to locally fairly
common species along the Pacific lowlands of all three countries.
Howell and Webb do not include this species for Honduras, but
Bonta and Anderson include it based on a sighting by David Anderson
made only a few years ago. I have made 4 visits to El Jicarito
in southern Honduras and I have seen Harris Hawks on every visit,
often with several sightings. On one visit with Adam Narish
on 19th April 2003 we saw two individuals mating, which is the
first breeding record for the country. I have also seen an immature
at the site in November. My only sightings in El Salvador have
been in the fields near Rio Jiboa. I have seen them throughout
the year, including the breeding season, which suggests that
they are resident breeders. However, breeding has not yet been
confirmed in El Salvador. I have still not seen this species
in Guatemala. |
