Least Storm-Petrel

Oceanodroma microsoma

Jehl found this species to be common as far south as Oaxaca, but rare further south in warmer waters, though present as far south as Costa Rica. On my pelagic trip off the coast of Guatemala on 11th May, we saw 2 birds. They flew very quickly and had to be chased by the ship as they did not linger around. Their size, when compared to the the much larger Black Storm-Petrel, and all dark colouration were the main identification features. None were seen on my pelagic trip off El Salvador on 2nd July.
