Cathartes

| This species is locally common in
the coastal wetlands and, according to Howell and Webb, they
are also found inland in northern Guatemala. I have seen them
most commonly in open marshes along the Caribbean coast of Honduras.
On the Pacific coast their status is less clear. They are fairly
common in the open marsh and mangroves of Monterrico in southern
Guatemala. Howell and Webb place a question mark over El Salvador.
There are a few reports, with Komar and Dominguez giving only
two records for the country. However, I have seen them twice
at Barra de Santiago in the West of the country. I have looked
for them in other suitable locations without success. There
are no records from southern Honduras. I am almost certain that
I once saw one at El Jicarito, but I was sidetracked by a Northern
Mockingbird (the first Central American record) and did not
get a description. However, on subsequent visits I have spent
time searching for them, without success. |
