Mangrove Black Hawk

Buteogallus (anthracinus) subtilis

Tom jenner
Many people consider the Mangrove Black Hawk to be a subspecies of Common Black Hawk. It may also be that only the southern forms of Mangrove Black Hawk (found on the Pacific slope of South America) are a true species. Howell and Webb consider the mangrove form to only be a subspecies. I have little to add to the debate, but include it here, with some photos of birds taken in Pacific Mangroves in the hope that it may stimulate further debate.
