Mississipi Kite

Ictinia mississippiensis

Howell and Webb classify this species as a migrant mainly along the Pacific coast, but also as an uncommon to rare migrant along the Caribbean coast. I have very few sightings of my own, but they do not seem to be in agreement with this. Komar and Dominguez only give one record for El Salvador, which I believe was from the south east of the country. I have another sighting, which was of two birds that were migrating over Perquin with large numbers of hawks and other raptors. They were not heading along the coast, but inland into Honduras. I also once saw a group of about 10 individuals just outside of Tegucigalpa on the road to San Pedro Sula. These records suggest that they cross over central Honduras rather than follow the Pacific coast.
