Northern
Bobwhite
Colinus
virginianus

The taxonomic status of the bobwhites has been in debate for
many years. Some authors include all of the bobwhites in one
species, whereas others divide them into many species. The Yucatan
Bobwhite is often considered a subspecies of the Northern Bobwhite
and the Spot-bellied Bobwhite is also occasionally lumped with
it. If these two are considered to be separate species, the
range of the Northern Bobwhite extends from the USA, through
much of Mexico and just into our region in western Guatemala.
Howell and Webb comment on how this species may be extending
its range into the region with the clearing of forests. Land
describes this species (which he calls Common Bobwhite) as present
in Guatemala only in the area around Nenton in the department
of Huehuetenango, where it is found to 1850m (6000ft). I have
still never recorded this species within the region.
