Northern
Harrier
Circus
cyaneus (or Hudsonius)
|
 |
| The AOU still consider the North
American form to be conspecific with the Hen Harrier of the
Old World, though many authors consider them separate species.
If the North American form is a distinct species, its scientific
name is Circus hudsonius. Some authors also consider
the South American Cinereous Harrier Circus cinereus
to be conspecific. I have only ever seen this species on two
occasions in northern Central America and both times it was
in El Salvador. The first one was at the small reed-fringed
lagoon at Colima. My other sighting was at the Rio Jiboa. Howell
and Webb call this an uncommon to fairly common winter visitor
and transient to the region. |
