Ocellated Turkey

Meleagris ocellata

Tom Jenner
This species has a very limited world distribution that is confined to the Yucatan Peninsular. Within this range, the species has been hunted extensively and it is now rare in many areas and wary of humans. However, in some locations, where they are not persecuted, they can become common and even quite tame. The best example of this is at Tikal in northern Guatemala, where the birds are commonly seen around the car park and main plaza of the ruins. Many of them have leg bands, but I am told that they are all completely wild birds. This is the only place where I have ever seen this species, though I am told that they are also fairly easy to see at Cerro Cahui.
