Ornate Hawk-Eagle

Spizaetus ornatus

This is an uncommon species throughout the region. I have still only seen them at Celaque (on two occasions) and at La Muralla, which are both in Honduras. Both of these locations are in the central highlands and a bit outside the range given by Howell and Webb. The altitudinal range they give for this species is 0 to 1500m. The sighting at La Muralla was just above this altitude, whilst both sightings at Celaque were much higher than this, with one at about 1700m and the other at about 2000m. This species is very uncommon on the Pacific slope and is now thought to be extinct in El Salvador.
