Plain
Chachalaca
Ortalis
vetula
|
 |
This species is found along most of the Caribbean slope of northern
Central America, except in eastern Honduras, where it is replaced
by the Grey-headed Chachalaca. On the Pacific slope, it is replaced
by the White-bellied Chachalaca, which is sometimes considered
to be only a subspecies of it. I have seen this species as far
east as La Muralla, which is beyond the range shown in Howell
and Webb. I did wonder whether I had misidentified a Grey-headed
Chachalaca, but I checked an unpublished list of the birds of
La Muralla by top Honduran ornithologist Pilar Thorn, which
includes the Plain Chachalaca as a resident species and does
not include the Grey-headed. My only sightings in Guatemala
have been at Tikal, where they are a common bird. I have seen
them at a number of locations in Honduras, including: the Aguan
Valley, Cerro Azul, Copan, Lancetilla and La Muralla.
