Solitary
Eagle
Harpyhaliaetus
solitarius

| Howell and Webb give this species
as a rare resident in the highlands of northern Central America.
There seems to be little reliable information on the status
of this species because of confusion with Great Black Hawk.
I recently made exactly this error when I photographed a heavily
marked juvenile bird at Perquin. This would have been the first
confirmed record for the country and most birders who saw the
photo (see photo gallery) felt that it matched the painting
in Howell and Webb perfectly. Only later did Bill Clark (probably
the leading expert on Neotropical raptors) point out that the
barred tail pattern and shape completely ruled out Solitary
Eagle and the bird was clearly a juvenile Great Black Hawk.
