Jehl reported this species as being “very rare”
in Middle America. He saw individuals on three days between
Tres Marias and Northern Guatemala in April 1973 and none further
south. I presume from this that he had a single sighting off
Guatemala. Although it is clearly not a common species, these
three sightings were made in only two weeks of observations,
with usually only a few hours of observations per day. This
doesn’t strike me as being ‘very rare’. I
did not see this species on either of my pelagic trips, which
were off the coast of Guatemala on 11th May and off El Salvador
on 2nd July.
