Sooty Shearwater

Puffinus griseus

Jehl reported this species as being “very rare” in Middle America. He saw individuals on three days between Tres Marias and Northern Guatemala in April 1973 and none further south. I presume from this that he had a single sighting off Guatemala. Although it is clearly not a common species, these three sightings were made in only two weeks of observations, with usually only a few hours of observations per day. This doesn’t strike me as being ‘very rare’. I did not see this species on either of my pelagic trips, which were off the coast of Guatemala on 11th May and off El Salvador on 2nd July.
