| This species is largely a migrant
through the region, though I have occasionally seen what were
probably wintering birds. During spring and autumn the migrating
flocks can be spectacular with many hundreds and even thousands
of birds migrating at once, often with large groups of Broad-winged
Hawks and Turkey Vultures. They tend to migrate through the
central highlands, though they are also seen in much smaller
numbers in with large flocks of Turkey Vultures that tend to
migrate more along the coastal plain. Early one morning in November,
I saw large numbers taking off from a couple of the uninhabited
islands in the Gulf of Fonseca, where they seemed to have roosted
for the night. |
