Turkey Vulture

Cathartes aura

Tom Jenner
This species is a very common resident throughout the region, though they tend to be less common at the higher altitudes. In winter, large numbers migrate down from further north and it is common to see big groups of many hundreds of birds during migration. There are often hawks mixed in with these migrating flocks, though the Turkey vultures tend to migrate more through the lowlands and the hawks tend to migrate more through the hilly areas.
