White Hawk

Leucopternis albicollis

Tom Jenner
For me, this is one of the most spectacular birds in the region. The species is fairly common in deciduous forest on the Caribbean slope of northern Central America, but is uncommon on the Pacific slope and mainly in the more humid areas of Guatemala rather than the drier Pacific slope that is found into El Salvador and Honduras. I believe that it only clings on in El Salvador at El Imposible (where the photos were taken). I have still not seen this species in Guatemala, but I have seen it at Pico Bonito and Las Marias in Honduras. At both of these places they seem to be reasonably common.
