White-tailed Hawk

Buteo albicaudatus

The patchy distribution of this species throughout Middle America is largely determined by the availability of their Savanna and open farmland habitat. I once saw a bird in one of the dry savannas in the West of the county near Cucuyagua. I have also seen this species on both of my visits to the savannas of coastal Mosquitia. A surprise sighting was an immature bird in fields near the Rio Jiboa in El Salvador in May 2005. I later discovered that Oliver Komar also saw a young bird there a few years ago. Whether these are breeding locally, or wandering youngsters, is not clear. There are a few other records for the country.
