Zone-tailed Hawk

Buteo albonotatus

Tom Jenner
Howell and Webb describe this as a winter visitor throughout northern Central America, but also mention that it appears to be an occasional breeder in the region. In flight, this species is surprisingly similar to the completely unrelated Turkey Vulture, which it is believed to mimic in order to approach unsuspecting prey. This is a species that I see in almost all habitats from the coast to high mountains. It also seems to be very irregular, being far commoner in some years than others, though I am conscious that I may notice them more in some years whilst in others I may not be looking out for them as much.
